Chronic Pain Management: Finding Relief and Improving Quality of Life
Chronic pain is a complex condition that can originate from many sources, such as injury or underlying medical conditions, and persist for many months or years. It can be debilitating, affecting one's physical and mental health, and dramatically impacting their quality of life. At Pacific Pain & Wellness Group, we understand the toll chronic pain can take on a person, and we are here to help.
What is Chronic Pain Management?
Chronic pain management refers to the treatment and care provided to individuals suffering from chronic pain conditions. Treatment usually includes pain medication, physical therapy, and nerve blocks, which can often be unsuccessful or exacerbate pain levels.
Pain Management for CRPS
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a form of chronic pain condition that causes intense pain, usually in the arms, hands, legs, or feet. It may happen after an injury, either to a nerve or to tissue in the affected area. CRPS typically develops after an injury, a surgery, a stroke, or a heart attack. Due to damage of the central nervous system, pain is amplified and more intense than that of a normal individual. Treatment usually includes pain medication, physical therapy, and nerve blocks, which can often be unsuccessful or exacerbate pain levels. Chronic pain symptoms for CRPS often include burning pain, changes in skin temp/color/texture, skin hypersensitivity, swelling and stiffness of joints, decreased range of motion. If left untreated, chronic pain symptoms often worsen. Ketamine infusions can block NMDA receptors, preventing nerves from firing pain levels and ultimately decreasing pain levels for CRPS.
Pain Management for Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain is often chronic and is the result of damage to nerves, characterized by burning or shooting pain, numbness, and tingling. Current treatments for neuropathic pain include conservative treatments like NSAIDs, nerve pain medications (Gabapentin), epidural injections, spinal cord stimulation, and Ketamine infusions.
Pain Management for Migraines
Migraines are a recurring type of headache that cause moderate to severe throbbing or pulsing pain, often on one side of the head. Migraines can be debilitating, making it impossible to carry out daily activities, and many individuals also suffer from nausea, weakness, and sensitivity to light and sound. Current pain management treatments for migraines include prescription and over-the-counter medication management for pain and nausea. Ketamine infusions for migraines have been proven to decrease the frequency and intensity of migraines, with few adverse side effects.
